Unused and Expired Medicine Drop-off at Public Safety Facility

Did you know that throwing away or flushing your unused/expired medicine could be dangerous to kids, pets, and the environment? The number drug overdoses due to prescription medications has skyrocket over the years, especially among children.

Now there is a better way. The City of Santa Monica Police Department, in collaboration with the Water Resource Protection Division of Public Works, and the Office of Sustainability and the Environment, installed a permanent unused and expired medicine disposal drop-off kiosk in front of the Public Safety Facility located at 333 Olympic Drive. This drop-off box is directly in front of the main doors and will be your new, one-stop spot to rid of those unwanted medicines and prescription drugs. The drop-off kiosk is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

From an environmental perspective, medications thrown in the trash or poured down the drain can end up in landfills or oceans, and have the potential to leach into the soil and contaminate groundwater and aquatic animals.

This program will ensure that potentially dangerous medicines are safely disposed of and that our kids and the environment are protected.
