Santa Monica Police Department Explorer
Alexis Cornejo took 2nd place among the
females in the Obstacle Course competition
at the Channel Islands Explorer Competition
hosted by the Oxnard Police Department. The
events were held last weekend at locations
in Oxnard, Camarillo and Ventura. Santa
Monica Police Department Explorers endured
record breaking heat throughout the weekend
competition.
The competitors, 400 explorers representing
30 explorer posts, from five states
participated in events which tested each
team’s skills in 17 events involving
simulated police calls and scenarios.
In team competition, the Post took 3rd place
in the following events:
Bus Assault, Relay Race, and Hostage Rescue
This year’s team consisted of 11 Explorers
who ranged in age from 14-19 years.

The Law Enforcement Explorer Post (LEEP)
exposes youth with an interest in Law
Enforcement to the various assignments in a
law enforcement agency. The program
emphasizes career opportunities, life
skills, citizenship, character education and
leadership experience.
The team was lead by advisors, Lt. Darrell
Lowe, Sgt. Greg Smiley, Officer Bobby
Villegas, Detective HeeSeok Ahn, Officer
Sean Stockwell and Crime Prevention
Coordinator Suzie Kim.
