On Friday, September 15, 2006, the Santa Monica Police Department with other Westside law enforcement agencies (Beverly Hills P.D. and Culver City P.D.) conducted a Driver’s License and Sobriety checkpoint in the 3200 block of Santa Monica Blvd. The checkpoint is in accordance with the State of California - Office of Traffic Safety grant in support of the “You Drink and Drive. You Lose” national campaign.
The Traffic Program, led by the Santa Monica Police Department, started the checkpoint at 8:45 pm and closed the checkpoint at 1:00 am. A total of 888 vehicles pass through the checkpoint and 284 vehicles were screened. Officers conducted four (4) driving under the influence investigations and arrested one (1) suspect for driving under the influence and one suspect for felony possession of a controlled substance; eight (8) citations were issued and seven (7) vehicles were towed for a variety of offenses.
The goal of this program is aimed at educating and bringing awareness to our community, while at the same time detecting and removing drivers who drive under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and irresponsible drivers from our roadways.
