On July
22,
2005,
the
Santa
Monica
Police
Department
received
a call
from a
citizen
who had
taken
still
photography
of three
Middle
Eastern
individuals
who were
taking
video of
the
Santa
Monica
Pier and
surrounding
area in
a manner
inconsistent
with
tourist
documentary.
Subsequent
investigation
of the
incident
determined
that
these
same
individuals
were
also
seen
taking
suspicious
video in
two
other
communities.
The
individuals
have
been
identified.
As a
result
of the
on-going
international
terrorism
activities,
the
Santa
Monica
Police
Department
will be
taking
additional
steps to
increase
police
visibility
at
various
locations
throughout
the City
of Santa
Monica
which
will
include
the
Santa
Monica
Pier and
the 3rd
Street
Promenade.
Chief
James T.
Butts,
Jr.
wants to
assure
residents,
business
owners,
and
visitors
that the
Police
Department
is
increasing
security
as a
pre-emptive
measure
against
any
potential
terrorism
threats
or other
security
breaches.
To date,
the City
of Santa
Monica
has not
been
informed
by any
federal,
state,
or
county
agency
that a
threat
has been
made
against
this
City.
The
Police
Department
will
continue
to be
proactive
to
reinforce
security
at
public
spaces
that
attract
large
crowds
so
visitors
will be
comfortable
coming
to Santa
Monica
and
enjoying
all that
we have
to
offer.
Santa
Monica
is not
the only
U.S.
destination
that is
taking
proactive
measures
and
raising
security
levels.
We are
taking
every
precaution
to keep
Santa
Monica
safe.
This
information
is advisory
and Chief
Butts will
continue to
provide
updated
information
concerning
public
safety as it
is made
available.
