On
July 10, 2004, the Santa Monica Police
Department conducted a driver’s license and
sobriety checkpoint in the 2000 block of
Main Street. Funding for this program was
provided by a grant from the Office of
Traffic Safety, obtained through the
California Business, Transportation &
Housing Agency. The grant entitled “We
LEADD” – Westside Law Enforcement Against
Drunk Driving is designed to improve traffic
safety in the community.
The
Santa Monica Police Department arrested one
driver for driving under the influence,
issued 9 citations for a variety of vehicle
code offenses and towed two vehicles. A
total of 866 vehicles drove through the
checkpoint and 256 vehicles were stopped in
a five-hour period.
The
goal of this program aims at educating and
bringing awareness to our community, while
at the same time detecting and removing
drunk and irresponsible drivers from our
roadways. |
