SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT

December 22, 2003

On December 20, 2003, the Santa Monica Police Department participated in the Nationwide DUI enforcement program “You Drink, You Drive, You Lose” sponsored by the State of California - Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, by conducting a checkpoint in the 700 block of Wilshire Blvd.

The Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Division, issued 8 citations for various vehicle code violations, towed five vehicles and arrested one driver for driving under the influence.  A total of 1,134 vehicles entered the checkpoint.  A total of 236 vehicles were stopped in a six-hour period.

The goal of these programs aims at educating and bringing awareness to our community, while at the same time detecting and removing drunk drivers from our roadways.
