The
Santa Monica Police Department is participating in a two-week program
entitled “Operation ABC – America Buckles up Children”.
The Santa Monica Police Department, along with more than 12,000
law enforcement agencies nationwide, will be involved in a crack down
on seat belt violators. Operation
ABC runs from May 19, 2003 to June 1, 2003.
According
to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 5,341
teens, ages 16-20, died and thousands more were injured in traffic
crashes in 2001. Two out
of five deaths among teens are the result of a traffic crash.
In 2000, the estimated economic impact of police-reported
crashes involving drivers between 15 and 20 years old was $32.8
billion.
The
Santa Monica Police Department will be conducting seatbelt checkpoints
and highly visible saturation patrols during the two-week period.
The goal of the Santa Monica Police Department is to educate
the community on the use of occupant seat belts and child safety
seats.
Santa
Monica residents seeking additional information regarding the proper
installation of child-safety seats may call the Traffic Division of
the Santa Monica Police Department at
(310) 458-8993.
