TRAFFIC SAFETY BICYCLE RODEO

April 18, 2003

The Santa Monica Police Department in observing “May is Bicycle Safety Month” will be hosting a Traffic Safety Bicycle Rodeo on Sunday, May 4, 2003, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Virginia Avenue Park located at 2200 Virginia Avenue.

Safe Moves, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving children’s lives through education, will be on-hand to assist in the bicycle rodeo by presenting an interactive program.  The program, “Safe Moves City” is designed to simulate traffic hazard facing students when they walk, ride and roll as pedestrians, bicyclists, skaters, skateboarders, and scooter riders.

Bicycles and helmets will be provided for participants to use.  Participants may also bring their own bicycles, scooters and skateboards and helmets.

The Santa Monica Police Department, through a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, will be giving free helmets to the first 100 participants.
