On
April 10, 2003, at 2:30 a.m., Santa Monica Police responded to the 900
block of 15th Street regarding an attempt auto theft.
While officers were conducting their preliminary investigation,
another officer in the area heard an auto alarm sounding in the
vicinity of Euclid and Washington. Officers saw a black Chevrolet
Tahoe leaving southbound on Euclid Ave. Officers stopped the black
Tahoe at Lincoln and Olympic.
A
felony vehicle car stop was initiated and officers gave the suspect
commands but he failed to comply. During the attempt to apprehend the
suspect during this felony stop, an officer fired one shot.
No one was injured as a result of the discharge by the officer.
The suspect fled in his vehicle and rammed one of the police
vehicles. After the
police vehicle was rammed, the suspect attempted to run over several
officers who were on foot. When
the suspect rammed the police vehicle, one officer was injured.
A
police vehicle pursuit ensued and terminated in the City of El Monte.
At the termination of the pursuit, the suspect fled on foot and
was later arrested with the aid of the Los Angles Police Department
Airship and a Santa Monica Police Department’s K‑9.
The
suspect has been identified as Raymond Rivera, M, H, 36 years of age
and is a transient. The
suspect was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police
Officer, Felony Evading, Grand Theft Auto, and he was also wanted on
an outstanding Parole Violation with an escape risk.
Rivera has No Bail.
The
injured officer was taken to a local hospital and treated and released
for abrasions to his arms and legs and removal of glass from his eyes.
The
Robbery/Homicide Unit of the Santa Monica Police Department is
handling the investigation.
