On
December 26, 2002, at 6:03 a.m., Santa Monica Police responded to a
local hotel in the 1700 block of Ocean Ave. regarding an armed robbery
investigation. When
officers arrived they located the victim who sustained severe facial
injuries. The victim,
Male, White, 56 years of age, from Texas was transported to a local
hospital and listed in critical condition.
Preliminary
investigation revealed that the victim met the suspect at a casino in
the South Bay. The victim and the suspect returned to Santa Monica and
went to the victim’s hotel room, were he was robbed and beaten by
the suspect. Investigators were able to locate the casino and with the
assistance of the casino security, a picture of the suspect was
obtained later in the day. A
Hotel Crime Alert was issued to the large hotels in Santa Monica on
December 26, 2002, with a photograph of the suspect.
Local
law enforcement agencies and casinos in the South Bay were provided
with a photograph of the suspect.
Investigators from the Robbery/Homicide Unit of the Santa
Monica Police Department were able to identify the suspect within 24
hours of the crime. An
arrest warrant was obtained and entered into the statewide law
enforcement computer.
On
December 31, 2002, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Santa Monica Police
were notified that Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested
the outstanding suspect at a casino in Compton.
Officers from Santa Monica Police went to Compton Sheriff’s
Station and picked up the suspect. He transported him to Santa Monica
Jail.
The
suspect has been identified as Jason Robert Manuel, Male, Black, 22
years old, of Los Angeles. He was booked for attempt murder and armed robbery.
Manuel’s bail has been set at $1,000,000.
