On
November 16, 2002, Channel 4 News, NBC TV, aired a special report on
the crime of rape. This
news program produced misleading and inaccurate information about the
crime of rape in the City of Santa Monica.
This recap has been produced to give residents and visitors to
the City of Santa Monica accurate and factual information regarding
this crime.
There
have been 21 rapes and 7 attempted rapes reported to the Santa Monica
Police Department from January 2002 to October 2002.
The
following information will provide an overview of the reported rape
and attempt rape incidents.
From
January 2002 to October 2002, there was 1 rape where the suspect has
not been identified. There were 20 rapes committed were the victim
identified the suspect as an acquaintance, ex-boyfriend, boyfriend,
ex-husband, husband, friend, or the suspect was arrested by the Santa
Monica Police Department.
During
this same period, there has been 1 attempt rape where the suspect has
not been identified. There
were 6 attempt rapes committed were the victim identified the suspect
as an acquaintance, ex-boyfriend, boyfriend, ex-husband, friend, or
the suspect was arrested by the Santa Monica Police Department.
