The
City of Santa Monica will conduct an emergency response drill at the
City Yards on Thursday, November 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The city drill is being conducted in conjunction with a
countywide exercise dubbed “Operation Critical Response” on the
same day.
Coordinated
by the Santa Monica Fire Department, the city drill will test the
readiness of fire, police, public works, transportation and other city
departments to respond to a potential act of terrorism.
A simulated explosion will occur at the Fire Training Facility,
where the Emergency Operations Center and Incident Command Post will
be established.
The
drill is not open to the public; however, representatives of the local
press interested in observing the exercise are invited to participate
in a media tour at 11:00 a.m.
Because
the EOC public information team is also testing our readiness to
partner with the press to communicate essential information to the
public in an emergency, your presence will be a great benefit to us.
We also hope stories you run about the exercise will send Santa
Monicans a positive message about the seriousness with which the city
approaches emergency response.
Primary
EOC contacts for the media on November 14 are Judy Rambeau at
310/710-3671 and Jill Barnes at 310/864-7287.
IMPORTANT
ACCESS INFORMATION: If
you plan to participate in the media tour, please park on Stewart
Street (between Olympic and the freeway) or at Stewart Park and enter
the Fire Training Facility through the southeast gate off Stewart
Street. This will be the
only entrance to the exercise and you must show media credentials
to the officer on duty at the gate to be admitted.
(The drill begins at the gate for all of us—staff will not be
admitted without ID either.)
