On September 2, 2002,
at 2:44 a.m., Santa Monica Police responded to the 1550 Beach parking
lot regarding an armed carjacking / robbery that just occurred. The
suspects carjacked a late model white Toyota, Celica. A short time
later an officer checking the area for the suspects saw the vehicle in
the area of National Blvd and Overland Ave. The suspect’s vehicle
drove eastbound on the Santa Monica Freeway and officers attempted to
make a felony stop. The suspect’s vehicle exited at 9th Street and a
vehicle pursuit ensued. The suspect’s vehicle failed to stop for
officers and was involved in an accident with a parked vehicle at 8th
Street and Hoover Ave. Both suspects fled from the vehicle after the
accident. The female passenger was arrested as she ran from the
vehicle. The driver fled on foot and climbed over a fence leading into
the Pac Bell SBC building located in the 700 block of Rampart Blvd.
Officers established
a perimeter and the suspect was contained within the building. The
suspect barricaded himself in the building and failed to surrender and
the Santa Monica Special Entry Team responded. The suspect was located
inside the building with the assistance of a Police K-9. Members of
the Special Entry Team entered the building took the suspect into
custody.
Both suspects were
taken to the Santa Monica Jail and booked. The driver was identified
as Edwin Umanzor M/L, 22 of Los Angeles, and he was booked for
carjacking and other related offenses. His bail as been set at
$100,000. The second suspect, the passenger, in the vehicle was
identified as a female juvenile and she was transported to Eastlake
Juvenile Hall and booked.
