On
Monday, July 15, 2002, former Santa Monica Police Officer Richard
Brulato pled "no contest" to one Felony count of California
Insurance Code Section 1871.4. The
plea was heard by Judge Kwan of the LA Superior Court, Department 115,
who pronounced him guilty and convicted him of that felony violation.
Mr.
Brulato was sentenced to one day in county jail, with credit for time
served; restitution to the City of $50,000; a fine of $200; 200 hours
of community service; three years of formal felony probation.
Mr. Brulato also resigned from his position as a police officer
and agreed to drop all Workers’ Compensation claims against the
City.
The
Internal Criminal Division of the Santa Monica Police Department
initiated the investigation and was assisted by the California
Department of Insurance. After
a thorough investigation the criminal case was filed with the Los
Angeles District Attorney’s Office.
