On
May 28, 2002, at 12:16 a.m., Santa Monica Police responded to the 1200
block of 3rd Street regarding an assault with a deadly
weapon that just occurred. When
officers arrived they spoke to the victim who said, that on May 27,
2002, at about 11:00 p.m., he was involved in a fight with the suspect
and was struck several times in the face with a fist.
The suspect walked away and later returned to the location
where the victim was sleeping.
While
the victim was sleeping in his sleeping bag, he felt pain to his legs
and woke up. Once awake,
he saw the suspect swinging a 2 feet metal bar at him.
The victim was struck several times by the suspect with the
metal bar. The victim
sustained a small cut on his hand and a large bruise to his right
knee. After the attack,
the suspect ran westbound on Wilshire Blvd.
Responding
officers detained the suspect in the 200 block of Wilshire Blvd.
A field show-up was conducted and the victim and witnesses
positively identified the suspect.
The
suspect has been identified as Russell David Johnson, M/W 28,
transient. Johnson was
booked at the Santa Monica Jail and charged with attempt murder and
his bail has been set at $500,000.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, May 30,
2002, in Department “S”.
The
victim is listed in good condition.
The
Robbery/Homicide Unit is handling the investigation.
