On April 20, 2002,
the Santa Monica Police Department participated in the Baker to Vegas
Challenge Relay Race. This year the race attracted over 200 Teams,
representing law enforcement and the entire judicial system. There
were teams from throughout the United States and around the world
including teams from Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Japan,
China, and Korea. The 120-mile relay race begins in Baker, California
and ends in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each team entered in the race consists
of twenty members who each run a leg of different lengths and
difficulty. During the day, the temperature often hovers around 100
degrees, but at night it drops very low, very fast. The runners are
followed by a van driven by the support staff.
Chief James T. Butts,
Jr., is pleased to announce that the Santa Monica Police Department’s
Baker to Vegas Team finished in 9th place out of 28 teams entered in
the under 300 division. The team’s overall time was 16:13:59
seconds.
