Chief
James T. Butts of the Santa Monica Police Department is urging the
continued support of the community in ensuring safe New Year
celebrations. Please join
the SMPD in persuading the residents of our City not to endanger
people by firing guns into the air on New Year’s Eve.
Each
year, as part of the New Year celebration, many individuals ritually
discharge their firearms into the air, not realizing the potential
consequences of their actions. California
Penal Code Section 246.3 prohibits negligent discharging of firearms.
Any person who violates 246.3 PC will have their firearms
confiscated and will be arrested for the felony crime. Shooters can
and will be arrested and prosecuted for negligent discharge of a
firearm, which is a felony and punishable by imprisonment in state
prison.
If
you see a person shoot a gun, REPORT IT.
Call 9-1-1 and give the dispatcher as much information as
possible about the shooting. If
you only HEAR gunfire, call (310) 458-8491 immediately.
