On December 22, 2000,
at approximately 1:30 P.M., a sexual assault occurred in a
subterranean garage located in the 900 block of Wilshire Boulevard.
The victim parked her vehicle in the lower-level of the garage and was
walking toward the elevator when the suspect approached her. Armed
with a handgun, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim, took her
purse, and fled.
Since December, Santa
Monica Police Investigators have worked continuously to locate the
person responsible for this crime.
Earlier this year, an
SMPD Investigator interviewed a subject who was in the area during the
time of the assault. In March, investigators linked that subject,
Carlos Bernardo Rivas, M/H 35, to the scene of the crime. SMPD
Detectives worked diligently to locate Rivas, however evidence
suggested he had left the country.
On June 1, 2001,
Santa Monica Police Department Detectives learned Rivas had returned
to Los Angeles and was possibly living with relatives in the 900 block
of 51st. Street. At approximately 4:30 P.M., Rivas was taken into
custody without incident.
Rivas’ bail is set
at $ 1, 835,000.00.
