  Tips For Social Services Agencies
EMERGENCY [Police/Fire/Medical] (24 hrs): 9-1-1
NON-EMERGENCY [Police] (24 hrs) 458-8491

  1. Opening/Closing Procedures - Be aware of your surroundings when opening or closing your agency. If a stranger who could pose a threat is loitering nearby, call for building security or maintenance personnel to accompany you. Try to plan your work schedule so that you arrive and leave with coworkers. Upon opening, if you notice any signs of forcible entry, do not enter. Avoid a confrontation with an intruder who may still be inside by calling the police (458-8491) to request a walk-through.
  2. Counseling Areas - Select or arrange an area where you will be providing counseling that is within view of your co-workers. Get into the habit of checking on the status of each other by glancing up from your work station or as you pass by a coworker. Avoid one-on-one counseling in an isolated area or when alone to someone who has shown prior unusual behavior.
Office Safety - Check for possible safety hazards, especially where the public has access. Secure office items such as scissors or letter openers out of easy reach. Store occasionally used items such as folding chairs or other office equipment in a less accessible area. Tables or desks that have sharp corners may pose a hazard in a fall. These can be replaced with furniture that has rounded edges. Plan to have adequate staffing at the reception area during office hours. This area should be located near the public entrance. Consider installing a door chime if the receptionist occasionally must step away from this area. Back to the top.
Additional Security Measures:
  1. Develop a means to summon help from coworkers if necessary. Existing phone intercoms or concealed wired panic devices can be used.
  2. Exchange information on potential risks with coworkers who work a later shift and with other related agencies which might be affected. For further information, call the Santa Monica Police Community Relations Unit at 458-8473.

For more information, call the Community Relations Unit of the Santa Monica Police Department at (310) 458-8474.
