Helping your Child
Succeed in School.
|
Children whose parents are attentive to their education and schoolwork tend to be better students and are better able to deal with the stresses of school and extra-curricular programs. Take an active interest in your child's education:
-
Talk with your children about daily events in school.
-
Find out if your children's teacher(s) assign homework and become involved in it -- regular assignments, reports and special projects.
-
Make sure your children have a quiet place to study without the distractions of the TV, video games, stereo or telephone.
-
Establish a regular routine -- regular times to do homework, chores, play and go to bed.
-
If your children are having difficulties or problems in school, investigate as soon as possible. Keep an open mind and listen to both sides -- don't automatically believe the teacher is right or your child is right.
-
Attend school Open Houses and other special events.
-
If your child brings home a disappointing report card:
~ Sit down with your child and review the report card.
~ Be calm. Let your child tell you about the poor grades.
~ Find at least one good thing about the report card and praise your child.
~ Ask how you can help your child do better.
~ Ask what your child can do to improve his or her grades.
