Child Abuse Prevention: How to Report Child Abuse?

How do I
Report
Child Abuse?

Ignoring Child Abuse allows the problem to continue. Each of us can make a valuable contribution to protecting children and preventing abuse and neglect. Children are among the most vulnerable and defenseless victims of crime and for many, concerned family, friends and community members represent the only hope these children have for stopping the abuse.

As mandated by California Penal Code section 11165, people in certain professions and certain lay persons are legally obligated to report apparent or suspected and/or knowledge of any form of child abuse within their professional capacity and within the scope of their employment. Any person required by law to report child abuse is immune from civil and criminal liability. Among these professions are child care custodians, educators, health and medical practitioners, social service and welfare employees, law enforcement officers, coroners, commercial film and photographic print employees.

The identity of persons who report child abuse under the requirement and the reports they make are confidential. A community member who is not required by law to report child abuse may also make an anonymous report of suspected child abuse. Back to the top.
