DISTRACTION BURGLARIES IN
THE SUNSET PARK AREA

On September 29, 2007, at approximately 5:30 p.m. and again on October 1, 2007, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Santa Monica police officers responded to calls regarding residential burglaries with the use of “distraction.”  We wish to alert residents to use caution when people come to their door or approach them at their home.

Typically, two, three, or four suspects target a home, usually because an elderly person lives there.  One of the suspects will claim that he/she is with the Gas Company, Water Company, a tree trimming service, or other similar service provider to claim maintenance is required.  One suspect will usually talk to the homeowner and distract him/her while the other suspects(s) go through the house and take jewelry, money, and other valuables.  Ruses of needing to use the resident’s phone for an emergency, or claiming to be a relative of the elderly resident are also employed.  Commonly, the suspects use telephones or walkie-talkies to communicate among themselves.

Chief Jackman encourages all residents to ask for company photo identification from a worker before they enter your residence and to be sure they are driving a company vehicle.  Usually the company vehicle is parked in front of your residence.  If the worker does not have identification or refuses to provide the identification, please call the police immediately at either 9-1-1 or 310-458-8491.
